Study Validates Tissue Oxygenation Monitoring

Helsinki, Finland – Finnish medical technology company SpectroCor Oy announces the publication of a validation study demonstrating that its monitoring device can accurately observe hemoglobin oxygen saturation in a tissue-like laboratory model.

Published in Spectroscopy Letters, the study evaluated the SpectroCor monitoring device using a red blood cell–based tissue hemoglobin oxygenation phantom with Intralipid scattering medium and yeast-based deoxygenation. The setup followed the EN ISO 80601-2-85:2021 standard typically used for cerebral tissue oximeters, as no dedicated standard currently exists for myocardial oxygenation monitoring.

Across a wide range of hemoglobin concentrations, the SpectroCor device achieved an average root mean square accuracy below 4%, and maintained accuracy below 5 percentage points even in the low oxygen saturation range of 0–40%, which is especially relevant for detecting myocardial hypoxia during cardiac surgery.

“This study provides an important technical foundation for SpectroCor’s technology,” says Dr. Kalle Kotilahti, CEO of SpectroCor. “Accurate, continuous assessment of tissue oxygenation is essential when the goal is to provide surgeons with real-time information about the heart’s condition.”

The results support further in vivo and clinical validation of SpectroCor’s technology for intraoperative myocardial oxygenation monitoring, particularly in open-heart surgery where oxygen delivery to the heart can change rapidly.
