SpectroCor Joins AATS 105th Annual Meeting

Seattle, Washington – May 2025 – SpectroCor participated as an exhibitor at the American Association for Thoracic Surgery (AATS) Annual Meeting, presenting its spectrophotometry-based technology that provides cardiac surgeons a real-time view of the heart’s oxygenation status during surgery.

The AATS Annual Meeting is widely recognized as one of the world’s leading scientific meetings in cardiothoracic surgery, bringing together internationally renowned surgeons, researchers, and innovators to discuss the latest advances in cardiac and thoracic care.

At the meeting, SpectroCor introduced the SpectroCor Tissue Oxygenation Monitor used together with the SpectroCor Sensor, a fiber-optic technology designed to observe myocardial tissue oxygenation during open-heart surgery. The technology enables real-time assessment of physiological changes in myocardial tissue during critical phases of surgery.

The technology was originally developed by Tommi Pätilä, MD, PhD, a pediatric heart and transplant surgeon, based on firsthand experience with the lack of direct physiological insight into myocardial tissue during cardiac surgery.

“In cardiac surgery, the myocardium can remain highly vulnerable during critical phases of the operation, yet surgeons have had limited direct visibility into how the myocardial tissue is responding,” said Dr. Pätilä, Co-founder and Chair of SpectroCor. “The idea behind SpectroCor emerged from a practical clinical need: to better understand myocardial tissue oxygenation in real time during surgery.”

Participation in AATS provided SpectroCor with an opportunity to engage with leading cardiac surgeons, clinician-scientists, and research institutions from around the world.

“AATS is a unique environment where discussions are driven by real clinical challenges,” Dr. Pätilä said. “Many surgeons immediately recognize the unmet need for additional physiological insight during cardiac procedures and the research possibilities this kind of technology may enable.”

SpectroCor continues to advance its technology through ongoing development and collaboration with clinical and research partners across Europe and the United States.

The technology presented at the American Association for Thoracic Surgery Annual Meeting is currently under development and not yet available for sale.
